Before I had kids of my own, I had the hardest time with gifts for little kids. Birthdays are such magical moments for children, and I always want my gifts to make them feel special. Since I have a 4 year old, I thought I could offer my suggestions for gifts for a 4 year old boy. A lot of these are great for 4 year old girls too- I am just saying “4 year old boy” because I’m a mom to one!

While this post is geared toward 4 year old boys, many of these gifts can be gender neutral or come in other options. (For example, the rocket paint kit that we had a great time creating also comes in a unicorn paint kit, dragon, rainbow, and other choices if you have a space-loving kid or dragon-loving kid!)
In general, my experience has been that 4 year old boys are interested in exactly what you think they might be into. Pirates, dragons, dinosaurs, sharks, sports. Here are the best birthday gift ideas for a 4 year old boy based on what has been a big hit lately for my son and his buddies!
Imaginative play and dress up
For imaginative play, 4 year olds love playing games like “camping” and building tents or forts, so a cozy indoor tent would be a wonderful addition to a 4 year old’s room! You could also do a color-it-yourself cardboard castle.
Some other popular choices for dress up for boys:
- Pirate hat and sword
- Police uniform, firefighter, doctor, or landscaper
- Super hero cape and mask
Building and educational games and toys
STEM gifts (or STEAM gifts) are really popular, and there are so many to choose from. We like the magnetic marble run with lots of options for building. Magnet tiles are also a great gift for building and “cause and effect” type of play. They have lots of add on accessories (like cars!), and multiple kits together will build a massive magnet tile castle.
If you want building on a larger scale, the Nugget couch or a similar version would be a great gift.
Like a lot of kids, mine like to examine the bugs they find outdoors. A bug catcher kit would be a cool gift to encourage that exploration and curiosity.
My kids each have one of their own kid-friendly cameras, another great gift idea. I love downloading their pictures to see life from their POV!
A Yoto audio player could be a perfect gift, too, or additional cards if you know they have one already!
Lego is always popular! Some of my 4 year old’s favorite sets (and what is on his wish list):
Outdoor toys
Stomp rocket
Gardening set and wheelbarrow
Power Wheels
Climbing structure or Ninja line (great for kids who like to swing or climb!)
Sidewalk chalk is always a huge hit
Experience gifts for kids
I always love experience gifts for kids birthday gifts! A pass to the local children’s museum, the zoo, aquarium, or even the movies can be a great idea for kids of all ages. And parents will appreciate the gift, too.
And more gift ideas
We love the Toniebox, with small characters (called Tonies) that are basically like audiobooks for kids. I did a whole write up on our Toniebox here!
