Redoing the Guest Room (My One Room Challenge)

Every time I walked by our guest room, I cringed a little bit, until I found out last Spring about the One Room Challenge on Calling It Home. It was the perfect nudge to get me to do something about the room I hated, and I thought it’d be fun to participate. Here’s a recap of what happened to the room. (And check out who’s taking part this time around over on Calling It Home!)

Here’s what we were dealing with before- some great shots of a room I hated (I really wish I had before before shots, which would have included artwork and furniture from the previous owners. We just bought the guest room stuff from them because it was easier for us than buying another bedroom set at the time, since we were moving from our individual apartments into this house). Oh, also- we had a major ice dam over the winter, so we had to replace the ceiling sheetrock and plaster.

This room was the worst color blue, because it just made everything so dark. (No, having one window in the room doesn’t help.)
Ah, a complete ceiling again…

This was my vision for the guest room – a serene space of neutrals:

And here is the room today. I love the cream walls and the clean look of the silver frames with white matting.

We travel quite a bit, so we decided to take photos from our favorite trips and hang them around the room. We also keep our travel books in here on a great console table I found at Target. I like having them displayed, and it’s something for our guests to check out if they need something to read.

On a recent trip to Turks & Caicos, T bought a postcard of the islands. I wasn’t sure what we were going to do with it, but I love the look of this framed cork board with the postcard on it. (It’s a really easy DIY, too!)

I absolutely love how the room came out and can’t wait to get started on the next one!
