Motorized Shades Worth Buying

We upgraded our sunroom with motorized shades, and I could not be happier with them. I searched for a while for a shade that would look good, filter strong sunlight, and – most importantly – that I could control using the Alexa device or an app. I wanted to be able to raise or lower all of the shades at the same time. (No one has time to be raising and lowering 10 shades in one room by hand.)

I’m so glad we took our time finding motorized shades for the sunroom, because these are perfect.

Light-blocking shades

Before we installed the shades, the sunroom got so much light that I had to wear sunglasses in there during the day. It was a little ridiculous. Not to mention that it isn’t insulated, so it would be very warm on sunny days and freezing cold on cloudy days!

I am so thrilled with our new shades. We have them set up so we can raise or lower all of them, just the ones in the front, just the ones on the side, or just the ones on the back, OR one at a time. It’s life changing. I’m considering updating all of the shades in our house to be motorized. They are just so convenient! If you asked me if motorized shades are worth buying, I would say 100% yes they are. The convenience of them outweighs the little you can save by buying the non-motorized version.

Charging motorized shades

These motorized shades do not have to be plugged in all the time. They run on battery power, which is housed inside of the header rail. You do have to recharge the batteries after some time (though ours have been up for about 2 months and we have not had to charge them at all), though there is a solar panel add on you can buy to reduce the need for electricity. I plan to order the solar panels for our shades since the sunroom gets such bright light all year long.

Installing motorized shades

Installing the shades was easy. It took us about an hour to install all 10! You just need a drill and a pencil (to mark where you will drill).

It’s important to measure (and measure again) before ordering, because these shades are custom sized. While I assumed all of our windows were the same size, they actually differed by a half inch (some 1/4”, some 5/16”). Measuring is very important!

If you’re looking for sunroom shades or motorized shades, I highly recommend these Graywind shades! They are also available on Amazon.
