The Best Ride-On Suitcases for Kids: Tested by A Mom of 3

Getting through the airport with 3 little kids is no small feat. We typically fly with one travel stroller that can fold up and go right in the plane’s overhead, but sometimes our flights are early or late and our middle (age 5) needs somewhere to sit, too. Otherwise, one of us ends up carrying him, plus luggage.

If there is one thing that has completely revolutionized airport navigation, it is the ride-on suitcase. Getting three kids through a crowded terminal requires serious strategy. As Terence and I finalize the packing list and itinerary for our upcoming July trip to Cape Cod, streamlining our luggage situation has been a major priority.

Travel gear needs to execute heavy lifting while maintaining a clean, polished, and elegant look—no distressed finishes or overly busy designs here. A true luxury-meets-practical aesthetic is the ultimate goal.

Here is a breakdown of three distinct ride-on carry-on styles to help you choose the right fit for your family:

So I tested a few different ride on suitcase options to see what the best would be.

Review of ride-on suitcase options for kids

Ride-on scooter suitcase

A scooter plus a suitcase! Perfect for kids on the go who need to move before they sit on a plane.

  • The details: At under $100, this is the most affordable option we are reviewing. It is foldable, so it fits in the overhead bin of the airplane. Kids can use it through the airport right onto the plane. It weighs only 7 lbs and can support up to 110 lbs.
  • The verdict: I ordered this for my son, complete with Spiderman suitcase attached on the front, and then had a sudden realization… Having a scooter suitcase meant we would also need to bring a helmet with us. Airports have hard flooring, and we would be going over lots of asphalt too, so a helmet was a non-negotiable. I returned this one right away because anything that makes MORE work just isn’t going to work for us.
  • My score: 2/10 too much hassle to have to bring a helmet too but my niece uses one and it works incredibly well for them

MiaMily ride on suitcase

Next was the MiaMily ride on suitcase that I kept seeing all over my Instagram ads. It’s an investment, but it’s so well made. I wrote a full review of the Miamily suitcase here. But here are the highlights:

  • The details: Crafted from a sleek, scratch-resistant polycarbonate hard shell, it offers 43 liters of packing volume and glides effortlessly on 360° spinner wheels. The most impressive feature is the structural integrity: it supports up to 220 lbs.
  • The verdict: It nails the luxury-meets-practical requirement perfectly. Because of the high weight capacity, an adult can comfortably take a seat on it while waiting in the security line. The design is chic, minimalist, and fits seamlessly into a classic travel aesthetic. It also includes a built-in child safety belt, making it secure for younger riders.
  • My score: 10/10 we bring this on every trip!

Sit and scoot kids’ suitcase- The Cegali Itsy Rider 20″

This ride-on suitcase for kids is explicitly designed to keep little ones entertained and functions as a fantastic stroller replacement for toddlers. Rather than a suitcase the child sits on and the parent moves, the child can use it as a sort of scooter.

  • The details: Weighing in at just under 7 lbs, it is reasonably lightweight. It supports children up to 80 lbs and features eye-catching double spinner wheels. Kids can sit and scoot or a parent can pull them.
  • The verdict: If your primary goal is keeping a busy toddler happily occupied, and they can follow directions and keep up with you at the speed you need, the novelty of this design is a huge win. The incredibly lightweight frame also makes it a breeze to hoist into a packed overhead bin. But for kids who dilly-dally and won’t follow your lead on their own, this creates more of a hassle than it is a help, in my opinion. Also, we found when testing this style that if the suitcase wasn’t full enough on the bottom, or if heavier items were packed up in the top part, the suitcase would fall over with my child sitting on it.
  • My score: 4/10

JetKids BedBox

The JetKids Bedbox by Stokke is one of the original fly-with-me suitcases for kids.

  • The details: Kids can ride on the suitcase and scoot along or have a parent pull them. Inside is a 5 gallon compartment for whatever treasures a child needs to bring, as well as a soft piece that transforms this carry on into an in-flight bed.
  • The verdict: Best for kids 3-7, who can scoot along and keep up with the family. I just don’t think it works well if a parent has to deal with other luggage or a stroller and pull their child along at the same time. I found that the inner compartment doesn’t hold enough to make it worth using this as a carry on. It just became one extra “thing” we had to bring along!
  • My score: 2/10 it just doesn’t work for us!

Amazon version of the ride on suitcase- The Lavoker 20″ Ride-On

The Lavoker is the Amazon version of the MiaMily carry on. They copied the folding seat but added a front compartment that opens. It is still a hardshell suitcase, just equipped with some highly thoughtful modern conveniences.

  • The details: Alongside the molded child seat, this model features a front-opening pocket and built-in USB and Type-C charging ports. It utilizes a tough PC shell and silent 360° spinner wheels.
  • The verdict: The front-access pocket is an absolute game-changer when you need to grab a wipe, a tablet, or a snack in under ten seconds without exposing the rest of your packed clothing to the airport. The tech features elevate its everyday practicality, and the solid exterior maintains a relatively clean and modern look.
  • My score: 7/10 but loses points for feeling flimsy compared to the MiaMily

Final Thoughts on Kids’ Ride on Suitcases

For ultimate longevity and a beautifully refined design, the MiaMily is the clear winner in my opinion. The fact that adults can use it as a resting spot is a bonus. That an adult can have their child sit on a carry on (that can actually hold a ton of stuff) and move them through the airport is invaluable. It’s perfect for kids who get tired and kids who are too wiggly and run too fast for you to keep up. If you rely heavily on screens and devices during layovers, the Lavoker’s charging capabilities and quick-access front pocket make it a highly functional runner-up.
