What to Wear for Fall Family Pictures (Easy Outfits)

If you’ve ever tried to coordinate outfits for multiple people, you know how daunting of a task it can be. It took me a while to find fall family photo outfits inspiration that fit the casual vibe I was looking for. Everything I found was too summery or only for a family with girls (I have a son too!). We had family photos taken this past weekend, so today I’m sharing some inspiration for outfit ideas for your whole family! If you’re looking for easy family photo outfit ideas with kids, I hope you’ll find this post helpful.

These outfits work best for the fall or winter months! So if you’re doing family photos in the fall, keep reading!

P.S. If you have a little girl who wears hair bows, this set of velvet bows I found on Amazon is awesome- a whole bunch of bows (10 in all) at an insanely good price!

Easy Fall family photo outfits with kids

When I’m planning out the coordinating outfits for our family photos, I first choose the color scheme I want to go with. Sometimes I put together a little graphic so I can see all of the pieces together. Then I order a few of the outfit items I’m looking at, and then I lay everything out together so I can see how it all looks side by side.

Here’s one mood board I was working on for a camel, cream, pink, and wine color family photo:

And here’s some of the method to my madness of choosing outfits for our family photos:

How to choose outfits for family pictures

Start with your pickiest family member first.

Whether it’s your preschooler or husband, you’ll want to pick their outfit first and move on to the next pickiest. For our family, I chose our baby boy as the “pickiest” only because his outfit options were limited. From there, I matched my preschool girl’s outfit, then chose mine, and then added in my husband’s.

Choose a color palette for Fall family photo outfits

I wanted family photos – not only for Christmas cards but to hang in our home, too. Because our entire house is decorated in blues (navy and light blue), gray, and white, I wanted our Fall family photo outfits to have colors that coordinated well so I could incorporate these photos into my decor. A few years ago we took photos in a gray and navy striped dress (for me) and an eggplant purple checked shirt (for my husband), and the end result was perfect for hanging in our home. For our family pictures this year, I chose cream and navy blue, with eggplant purple, black, and camel colored accents.

Look for texture and layers.

I add in different textures (think a cable knit sweater or a ribbed shirt) and layers to add visual interest. For my preschooler, this meant adding in a teddy bear coat to her outfit. So, for my husband, we added a v-neck sweater over his collared shirt.

For mom and dad:

For little girls:

For baby boys:

Family picture outfit options

Outfit 1: Sister and Brother Outfits

Sister outfit: Pink sweater dress (also comes in girls’ sizes), green velvet hair bow, tights and black ballet flats

Brother outfit: Navy striped cardigan, baby jeans, camel colored shoes

Outfit 2: Navy Blue Sister and Brother

I love this coat and dress together, and the navy blue in the hair bow matches so well with little brother’s sweater set. His camel colored shoes pull in the color of the coat, tying their outfits together.

Big sister outfit: Striped dress (from this brand last year), leopard print fuzzy coat, navy blue hair bow, tights, and light pink ballet flats

Baby boy outfit: Navy blue sweater set and camel-colored shoes

Outfit 3: Family Photo Outfit

I always like to have some texture or pattern to our grown up outfits and let the kids stand out with bolder colors. But we’re going to do a fall colored backdrop, and I think my husband’s deep purple gingham shirt will work really well with the colors of the leaves!

Fall family photo outfits option for a dressier Fall family photo

I always like to go for comfy outfits that my kids might wear on a normal day, because I want the pictures to reflect who they really are. But if you want to go dressier, lean into a velvet for your little girl, sheer sleeves for you, puffy sleeves for your daughter, and maybe a gingham button down for your son!
