If you haven’t heard about GoodBuy Gear yet, then this is probably a second hand retailer you’ll want to know about it. If you’re looking for reviews on GoodBuy Gear, welcome! I’m a mom of three who likes functional baby gear that makes my life easier, which sometimes means going for higher end brands. (You can read about my favorite double stroller here, but also my favorite wagon which is much more affordable than many on the market.)
My experience buying discounted baby gear from Goodbuy Gear is below. I paid for the item with my own money, and they did not know I was planning to write a review when I placed the order. To Goodbuy Gear, I’m just another mom!
I was on the hunt for a well-priced Keekaroo changing pad, since I had borrowed my sister’s and absolutely loved it. I wanted to find a good deal but not have to drive an hour buying from someone on Facebook Marketplace. So I decided to check out Goodbuy Gear, which I’ve seen in ads in the past (but this was my first purchase from them).
What’s Goodbuy Gear?
First, let’s cover this. Goodbuy Gear is essentially a consignment store that runs online. They sell discounted baby gear that may have been gently used or an open box item from a brand. (For example, the Keekaroo I bought was an open box aka a return from someone who bought the Keekaroo from a bigger store.) Stock changes constantly, and you could find some really good deals if you keep an eye on things (or set alerts).
Goodbuy Gear seems to regularly have travel strollers like Babyzen strollers, Snoo swaddles, and Uppababy stroller attachments. Sometimes you can even get up to 75% off an item! Occasionally they’ll have a Stokke Trip Trap high chair on sale, but those always go SO fast.
What is “Open Box” vs. Used/Secondhand baby gear?
Anything secondhand or used is, obviously, used before they come to you. That could mean they were heavily used – or not used at all and just sat in someone’s closet. Either way, it’s typically coming from someone’s house. Goodbuy lists the amount of wear on an item (does it have stains, dents, wear) so you can see that information before you buy. Open box, on the other hand, might mean that it was a store’s floor model, inventory overstock (the store bought too much of something), or was returned – and the store couldn’t sell it as new. New items that are open box tend to be around 20-30% off retail price. You should know that open box items could be an older model of something, scuffed, or show wear (think of the strollers you go and push around in a Target). Because you’re buying from a middleman/consignment store, items typically are not under warranty anymore. Goodbuy Gear does have their own 2-year warranty on select items.
My experience buying from Goodbuy Gear
Like I mentioned above, I purchased a Keekaroo changing pad from Goodbuy Gear. It was listed in “open box” condition with slight imperfections. When it arrived, it came in a Keekaroo box that had been taped back up (which you’d expect with an open box item). It came with the strap and manual you’d find in a new item.
Here are a few things you might be wondering about in buying from Goodbuy Gear:
- Shipping time: It was only a couple of hours from placing an order to when it shipped, which was impressive!
- Item quality: The changing pad came pretty much as was described on the site. I kind of wish there had been pictures of the slight imperfections (which almost looked like the changing pad had been bent a bit- barely noticeable in the photos below), but it didn’t bother me since I knew that what I was buying wasn’t going to be perfect.
- Item cost: I spent $98 for an open box Keekaroo on Goodbuy Gear, which is around what people are selling them for on Facebook Marketplace. (On Amazon they’re $149.95 at the time I published this post.) I liked buying this particular item as an open box item, though, because it IS a changing pad and I saw far too many stained ones on Facebook Marketplace to make me feel okay about buying one that had been used.
Can you return purchases?
I had looked up the return police ahead of time just in case my purchase arrived damaged or not in the condition listed. The return policy on the Goodbuy Gear site says that any item not matching its description can be returned within 14 days. That’s as long as it’s shipped to them within 3 days of receiving the return label. Basically, don’t wait to open your package from them. Open it and inspect it right away just in case anything is wrong.
Goodbuy Gear also offers what they call “return assurance” which you can opt into at checkout. It’s an additional cost based on the cart total. For example, a $72 baby monitor would be an additional $4.19 in return assurance. This lets you return an item that doesn’t fall under their return policy.
Selling baby stuff with Goodbuy Gear
I haven’t sold with Goodbuy Gear, because it currently isn’t available in Boston. Right now there are selling locations in Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA; and Brooklyn, NY. If you live in one of those locations, you can sell your gear (they pick up!). Or you can drop off.
They accept tons of gently-used items that still work. This includes car seats, carriers, strollers and wagons, toys, balance bikes, high chairs, backpacks, toys, and more. They do NOT take stuffed animals, beddings, books, clothing, or shoes. You make up to 80% of the sale price, based on their sliding scale. Anything under $50 only gives you 10% in store credit. Selling items over $400 give you 85% in cash or store credit.
You will not make as much as you would selling elsewhere. BUT they take care of the photos and the selling and the communication. All you need to do is drop off (or have the items picked up). For example, you can sell a DockATot for about $50 on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, and with GoodBuy Gear you’ll make only about $4. It’s a much smaller lift but for equally small payout. That said, if you aren’t selling for the money and just want to keep baby gear out of landfills and have it off to another family at a discounted price, then it’s a no brainer! If GoodBuy Gear was local, I would definitely make use of it.
In short, my experience buying from Goodbuy Gear was positive, and I’d buy from them again.
