The Stanley Quencher has taken the world by storm. It’s wild how something can go viral on social media, like the Stanley cup. I’m not sure the brand was expecting such a huge response, but it seems like once TikTok gets a hold of something there’s no telling WHAT will happen! Today I want to talk about my thoughts on the Stanley Quencher Tumbler vs. Simple Modern Tumbler.
The Stanley 40 oz used to sell out as soon as new colors were released. Now it seems like Stanley increased production a LOT because they’re a lot easier to get. They also started collaborations, including one with Whole Foods, one with Target, and newly launched is one with Dani Austin, a Texas based influencer.
At $40+ for a cup, it makes you wonder “Is the Stanley cup really worth it?” so today I wanted to share a little side by side comparison of the Stanley Quencher vs. the Simple Modern tumbler I bought on Amazon. (For almost half the price.)
Stanley Quencher Tumbler vs. Simple Modern Tumbler
Stanley 40 oz Quencher
This is the Stanley cup that went viral first. Why do people love the Stanley cup so much? It has a double-wall vacuum insulation, an ergonomic handle, and a three-position lid. The lid has an opening for the reusable straw that comes with it, an opening for sipping, and a full-cover top to prevent spilling. It is BPA free, dishwasher safe, and fits in my car’s cup holder. It also has a ton of high ratings: On its website, there are over 1600 reviews averaging 4.5 stars.
And now you can customize the Stanley! Add a monogram, name, or graphic to the 40 oz tumbler or 30 oz tumbler, or a bunch of other products on their site like the 20 oz, 14 oz, etc.
Pros of the Stanley:
- It has a handle!
- The 40 oz cup holds a ton of liquid so you don’t really need to refill it a lot. Because it’s so big, I tend to take it on long car rides or if I know I’m going to be in and out of the car a lot. I don’t typically take it into stores with me on errands though – it’s just too big and heavy. Personally, I like the 30 oz Stanley a lot better than the 40 oz!
- The website guarantees that it will keep your drinks hot for 7 hours and cold for 11 hours. I’ve only used it for water, but it does keep things cold for a while.
- Dishwasher safe
- BPA free
- The 2.0 version has a newer lid that is more spill-proof than the 1.0 version of the cup
Simple Modern cup
The Simple Modern tumbler also has a double wall and vacuum insulation, which keeps your drinks hot or cold. It’s dishwasher safe, just like the Stanley, and it’s made from food-grade 18/8 stainless steel. The Simple Modern comes with two lids: a straw lid and a flip lid. I like that it comes in a variety of sizes to fit your lifestyle. For example, the 40 oz is too big for me – so I got the 24 oz and it’s perfect for drinking water at my desk during the day!
Mine also came with two reusable straws instead of just one. This one also fits in my car’s cupholder. The Simple Modern cup has garnered a solid 5-star rating on Amazon, with over 55,000 reviews!
Pros of the Simple Modern tumbler
- Comes in more size options than the Stanley tumbler: 16 oz, 20 oz, 24 oz, 28 oz, 32 oz, and 40 oz
- They do make a 40 oz tumbler option with a handle! (They also make a 50 oz if the 40 isn’t big enough for you!)
- You can get a variety of colors but also special printed bottles like Disney characters, florals, etc. in the 24 oz size
- They also make a kids water bottle version which we have used for almost 2 years (and they have held up really well!)
- You can buy them when you want to because they don’t often sell out
- You can buy the Simple Modern reusable straws
- Dishwasher safe

Alright, now onto the good stuff…
Why I’m torn between the two
I bought a lead kit to test the cups because (by now I’m sure you’ve heard) they solder the bottoms with a lead pellet inside. Pretty much every stainless steel/vacuum sealed cup has this. Well, I normally put my cups in the dishwasher but the Simple Modern tested positive for lead recently, so I had to throw it out. (That said, you probably should hand wash your cups!) The Stanley, though, will leak if it is turned on its side (which the Simple Modern doesn’t do). So 1 point for the Stanley, 1 point for the Simple Modern. Right now I am using my Stanleys, because even though the Simple Modern doesn’t leak and I love it for that, I just can’t get past the lead toxicity happening so quickly (I haven’t had the cup that long!).
So what do you think? Are you a Stanley lover? Simple Modern fan? Let me know in the comments what you think between the two brands!

I just bought my wife a Simply Modern 40 Oz cup. She LOVES it! It does come with 2 reusable straws, a good handle, and a screw on lid. It keeps her drinks hot or cold for a long time. Honestly, I was very impressed with the leak / spill-proof lid. She filled her cup to the top with ice, then water, and screwed on the lid. She told me to remove the straw and after I did she tipped the cup upside down. For a few minutes, I watched expecting droplets of water to come from somewhere… but it didn’t come out at all. This cup actually amazes me!
