When you’re walking around Disney, you’ll notice two distinct groups of people. One is the all-in, family matching outfits group and the other is the casual, regular clothing group. We definitely go more toward the casual, regular outfits. I usually buy a few cute pieces for my kids but otherwise I’m all about comfort. You’re going to be walking a LOT, it may be hot, you’ll be standing in lines… You don’t want to be wearing anything stuffy or uncomfortable. Today’s post is all about what to wear at Disney, but if you’re looking for other Disney tips you can head here to see all of my Disney posts (including where to buy the cutest Disney dresses for kids, our experience at Disney After Hours, and where we have stayed on our Disney trips – not in the parks!).
General outfit advice for Disney
In terms of outfits for the family, here’s my biggest advice:
Pack two full outfits for everyone per day. You never know what might happen (spills at breakfast, running fully into the water elements at the Moana Journey of Water experience, getting wet on rides) and it’s better to be prepared. Now, this is from a mom of 3 littles who most definitely had a stroller with us each day. If you aren’t traveling with a stroller you can bring a backpack to carry any extras you need for the day.
Try on everything before you go. No brand new clothes or sneakers before your trip! If you’re getting newer shoes for the trip, make sure you break them in before your park days.
What I wore at Disney
There’s a pretty simple formula for a perfect Disney outfit… Choose an easy basic based on the weather. This will be leggings or joggers, a tee, sneakers, and some outer layer (track jacket, denim jacket, or long sleeve shirt). If it’s hot, maybe your basic is an athletic dress or a skort and simple Disney t-shirt. Add on your belt bag and Minnie ears, and you’re ready to go!
My greatest outfit of the trip was this athletic dress I bought last summer. I brought two and wore them both. They just released new colors so I already purchased two more for this year.
I wore my Allbirds (mine are the Wool Runners) for park days. They are my most comfortable sneakers (highly recommend!) and gave a little bit of color to my otherwise black and white outfit. I wish I had better photos from the park days but I was behind the camera 99% of the time instead of in front of it!
I bought Minnie ears outside of the parks (from here), and I love these. The park ones tend to give me a headache because they’re so stiff, and these are not stiff and I actually forgot I had them on half the time! Plus they’re not $45 🙂
My biggest mistake on this trip outfit wise? I brought a bunch of cute dresses, forgetting that my dresses needed to be breastfeeding friendly. Face palm. On the first day I ended up cutting part of my dress so the baby had access. But because it’s a wrap dress, it still works and I can still wear it. But ugh, half of my suitcase wasn’t wearable because I wasn’t thinking about that!
We went for a casual Character Breakfast at the Four Seasons Orlando, which we love for its great food and laid-back atmosphere. For sensory-sensitive kids, this would be a perfect introduction to characters because you can see them from afar, there are no super loud “parties”… it’s just a much more laid-back way to do a character breakfast. You do need to get reservations ahead of time, as people have definitely found out about this!
And then for our travel days, this was my outfit. Clearly my closet needs a little more color… I’m just coming out of the postpartum period where it feels like nothing fits or looks good, which is why black is the predominant color in my closet these days. But that will change as we go into the summer months, too!
Tip: Bring a hands free bag. I LOVE my belt bag and it came with me to the parks every day.
Next time I’ll do a better job of getting pictures in the actual parks! 😉
Disney Capsule Wardrobe
I actually kind of love that I stuck to just a couple of colors. It makes it a lot easier to get dressed when you’re pulling from the same color palette on a trip! I hope this helps you with your future Disney trip. Make it easy on yourself!
