If there is one thing I’ve learned after hauling three kids through Boston’s Logan Airport more times than I can count, it’s that a good travel stroller makes or breaks the trip. Whether we are packing up the car for a week on Cape Cod or navigating the cobblestones in Europe, a bulky, heavy stroller that is difficult to fold up and transport is my worst nightmare for travel gear.
I’ve been getting a ton of questions about the Evenflo Hummingbird that showed up in one of my Instagram stories, so I wanted to write a dedicated gear review and see how it stacks up against another heavy hitter in the travel space: the Ergobaby Metro+.

The Evenflo Hummingbird: Ultra-Lightweight Stroller
When Evenflo calls this “ultra-lightweight,” they aren’t kidding.
- The Weight: It weighs a ridiculously light 9 pounds. That is about half the weight of most standard travel strollers. Because the frame is made of carbon fiber, it stays sturdy without the bulk. You can easily carry it with one hand while holding a toddler in the other.
- The Fold & Carry Handle: It features a true one-handed compact fold and has an integrated carry handle. It fits beautifully in tight trunks and stands up on its own. (Why don’t other strollers have this easy carry handle??) Note: The cupholder still fits on comfortably when you fold up the stroller for storage.
- Features for the Price: It holds kids up to 55 lbs (which is huge for longevity), has a generous UPF 50+ canopy, and a 10 lb capacity storage basket. For a stroller that retails around $229 (and frequently goes on sale), it punches above its weight class.
- Color options: It comes in a few colors like Crest Gray and Caslon Green. The Hummingbird is aptly named, as its sleek carbon fiber frame gives it a very clean, transitional look- nothing loud or overly plastic-looking. It’s light, perfect for moving about quickly, and gives off that “I’ve traveled with kids before” vibe.
- Comfort: While the Hummingbird is not ultra padded for your little one, its seat is perfectly comfortable for a day trip to the mall, per my toddler.
- Wheels: I wouldn’t take the Hummingbird onto cobblestone streets or a dirt road, because the wheels are definitely not equipped to handle rough terrain. But the smooth floors of an airport, mall, or asphalt of a theme park would all be perfectly fine terrain for this mini stroller.
Head-to-Head: Evenflo Hummingbird vs. Ergobaby Metro+
While the Hummingbird is amazing for pure portability, how does it compare to my ride or die travel stroller, the Ergobaby Metro+ (full review) (or the newer Metro 3)? The Metro+ is a premium travel stroller that focuses heavily on ergonomic comfort. If you prioritize deep recline, cushy padding, and an adjustable handlebar, stick with the Metro+. If you need the absolute lightest carry weight and the smallest possible fold for strict overhead bins, the Hummingbird wins.
Where the Hummingbird Wins
- Weight & Carrying: At just 9 lbs versus the Metro+’s ~17 lbs, the Hummingbird is significantly easier to throw over your shoulder or lug up subway stairs when navigating cities like NYC. It’s so small that you could maybe even fit it into a large backpack to carry around just in case you need it.
- Price: It is more budget-friendly than the Metro+.
- Weight Limit: It accommodates kids up to 55 lbs, whereas the Metro+ caps out at 50 lbs. Not a huge difference but something to note.
Where the Ergobaby Metro+ Wins
- Newborn Readiness: The Metro+ has an incredible built-in “Newborn Nest” that allows the seat to lie almost completely flat with protective sides. You can use it from day one without needing separate bassinet attachments. The Hummingbird, on the other hand, is recommended for 6 months and up, and I wouldn’t use it for an infant younger than that.
- Ergonomics & Comfort: Ergobaby is famous for its support. The Metro+ features plush, multi-zone padding, an adjustable handlebar that is a lifesaver for taller parents, and rubber tires that handle bumpy sidewalks and historic streets much better. The handlebar on the Metro feels better when you’re walking a long time, as you can put your hands farther apart than you can with the Hummingbird.
- Visor: The Metro has a much larger canopy, which protects your child from the sun and also makes it darker in case they fall asleep. The Hummingbird has a smaller canopy which works fine in most cases but as the Hummingbird doesn’t recline backward, it’s not the best scenario for an on-the-go nap.
- Storage: The under-seat storage on the Metro is much larger than on the Hummingbird.
Which Travel Stroller is Better?
If you need a stroller for local errands, quick weekend road trips, or you want the absolute lightest thing possible for carrying through the airport and don’t need a lot of storage space, the Evenflo Hummingbird is a fantastic, stylish buy. This is the stroller I would pick if I was going on a trip with a preschooler and needed a stroller for rests here and there but wouldn’t rely on it for the majority of the trip.
However, if you are planning a trip with an infant under 6 months, or you need a travel stroller that feels closer to a full-size everyday stroller for long walks on uneven terrain, or a large under-stroller storage area, the Ergobaby Metro is definitely worth the extra investment.
Buy the Ergobaby Metro+ if:
- You want a travel stroller that doubles as an everyday compact stroller.
- Your child naps frequently on the go and needs thick padding and a deep recline.
- You and your partner have a significant height difference (adjustable handlebar).
Buy the Hummingbird if:
- Every ounce counts, and you want minimal carrying weight over your shoulder.
- You frequently fly small regional jets where bin space is extremely tight.
- You prefer an ultra-fast, single-motion fold.
