How to Make Giant Ornaments for Your Christmas Decorations

I first found those giant ornament balls at my local garden store, where they had a big display of the huge Christmas ornament decoration that had been featured on Shark Tank. I bought one because I thought it looked so cool. I wanted to have a bunch to put on my front porch, but I didn’t want to invest a lot because our weather is unpredictable. (The only problem was the $60 price tag!) I didn’t know if these would actually survive a New England December on the porch.

So this year I ordered a couple of exercise balls and set out to create my own DIY giant ornaments for our outdoor Christmas decorations. I think they turned out SO cute! And each one cost me just $10.

How to make a giant Christmas ornament

Here’s how I made them:

First I purchased these exercise balls. I used my handy inflator. They come with a hand inflator but it takes forever, so I much prefer the electric one. (It’s great for pool floats, too!)

Then I used plastic takeout containers and cut the edges to be scalloped. Then I poked a hole in the top. I painted these with a gray acrylic paint and then painted a silver metallic acrylic paint on top. (They needed 2 coats of paint.) I had originally planned to just spray paint them but realized my spray paint was gone so I was just working with what I had! You could also do black paint, gold paint, bronze paint, or whatever color you want to use.

I used a thin wire I had to make the ornament hanger. I just wrapped it around the plug in the inflated exercise ball with both ends of the wire.

Also, I made 3 matching bows for the 3 giant ornament balls. It’s the same ribbon I have on my front door wreath. And finally, I put a small command hook on the siding and looped the wire on the “ornament” around the hook to keep it in place.

These DIY giant ornaments are absolutely brilliant and budget-friendly! I love how you creatively tackled the challenge of achieving that festive look without breaking the bank. The scalloped takeout container idea is genius, and the silver metallic paint adds a touch of elegance. It’s fantastic that you shared this cost-effective alternative for those of us who want a stunning outdoor display without the hefty price tag. The matching bows and personalized touches make them even more charming. Thanks for the inspiration! Now, my front porch is set to shine with these adorable giant ornaments. Cheers to your crafty and thrifty holiday spirit!
