IKEA HEMNES Daybed with Drawers: A Review after 7 Years

Years ago our friends had the most innovative piece of furniture- a daybed that pulled out into a king size bed for when they had guests. I thought it was so cool to have something that could function as a couch during the day and a bed for 2 adults when needed. We ended up buying it for our playroom, which doubled as a guest room. 3 years later it became our daughter’s main bed when she moved out of her crib. Now after owning one for 7 years, I wanted to share my review of the IKEA Hemnes daybed with drawers.

Have you seen the IKEA Hemnes daybed with drawers? It is a versatile and stylish piece of furniture that combines the functionality of a bed and storage in one. It’s perfect for a kids bed, or for occasional guests- with a few caveats, of course.

Quick overview of the Hemnes daybed

  1. Design: The Hemnes daybed has a classic and timeless design with clean lines and a sturdy, solid wood frame. It typically comes in neutral colors like white, black-brown, or grey, making it easy to match with various decor styles. In true IKEA fashion, the lines are clean and the knobs are their normal black knobs. We switched ours out for gold round knobs to better match the decor in my daughter’s room.
  2. Functionality: This daybed can function as a single bed or be used as a sofa during the day. The backrest and sides can be used as seating, and it’s designed to accommodate a standard twin mattress (not included but you can buy when you buy the bed). It easily transforms from a twin into a king size bed.
  3. Storage: One of the standout features is its built-in drawer located underneath the bed. This drawer provides ample storage space for bedding, toys, or other items, helping you keep the area tidy. We use the right drawer for sheets, the middle drawer for blankets and stuffed animals, and the left drawer for books and more stuffed animals.
  4. Dimensions: The dimensions can vary slightly depending on the specific model and color, but it generally fits a standard twin mattress and has dimensions that make it work for both small and larger rooms.
    • Width: 39 3/8 inches (100 cm)
    • Length: 77 1/2 inches (197 cm)
    • Height: 35 3/8 inches (90 cm) including the backrest
  5. Assembly: As with most IKEA furniture, it requires assembly, which involves following step-by-step instructions to put it together. It’s helpful to have a second person for easier assembly. The IKEA Hemnes daybed with drawer weighs approximately 120 pounds (about 54 kg).
  6. Materials: The daybed is usually made from solid wood or engineered wood, depending on the finish and color.
  7. Price: It is generally considered affordable, offering good value for its functionality and quality.

The IKEA Hemnes daybed is designed to support up to 220 pounds (about 100 kg) per sleeping area and is designed to fit a standard twin mattress on each sleeping area. (If you use it as a double sleeping place, you’ll need two separate twin size mattresses.)

The daybed opens to be two twin mattresses side by side, so basically a king size bed! It’s perfect for sleepovers

Note: The dimensions for a standard twin mattress are typically 38 inches wide by 75 inches long (97 cm by 191 cm), and the daybed is made to accommodate this size. You really couldn’t put a king size mattress on here because then you wouldn’t be able to fold up the daybed (the reason you really need two twin mattresses).

Last thoughts about the IKEA Hemnes daybed

Overall, I think the IKEA Hemnes daybed with drawer is a practical and stylish option for maximizing space and providing both sleeping and storage solutions in a variety of settings.
