When we first moved into our home we came with a bedroom set each, and that’s about it. Hah! We were both living in apartments at the time, so that’s all we owned. We purchased a couch and loveseat, dining room table and chairs, and a couple of small end tables and lamps, but then it was time to find rugs and curtains. One thing I was not prepared for is how expensive rugs can be! Even now, some of the ones I’ll see online and think, “oh that’s cute” – guys… they’re thousands of dollars.
That said, I stumbled upon Rugs USA at some point and was impressed with the prices of the rugs and the hundreds of reviews saying that they were legit. I placed my first order, then a second, then a third… And now I figured it’s probably time I share my Rugs USA review! I’m going to talk about the rugs we have in our home first and then talk a little about the company as a whole.
Rugs USA rugs in my home
Sidenote: Rugs USA recently came out with custom sized rugs, which is a dream for those of us with oddly shaped spaces that don’t fit a normal-sized rug!!
Living room rug
This rug hides EVERYTHING. That’s super important to me with 2 little ones running around the house. The only thing that’s been noticeable on it was a large hot pink Play Doh splotch, but that would show up on anything. (Also, what parent lets little kids have Play Doh on a rug? Oops.)
When I originally was looking for a living room rug, I wanted something that would hide any stains (again, 2 little kids) but would also pull in the coastal colors I have in my home. And because we needed a large area rug (9×12), I wanted something fairly affordable. We’ve been pretty pleased with this rug so far!
Prior to this blue rug we had the tan Moroccan Trellis rug, which was perfect for lightening up our living room when it was all neutrals (before kids).
Kids’ bedroom rugs
I bought this amazing shag rug for my son’s room a few months ago. It’s super soft, doesn’t shed, and was the right price. The only downside is that it’s white, but so far so good (fingers crossed). He also has this blue and white striped pouf, also sold by Rugs USA. The blue striped lamp in his room is also Rugs USA – did you know they sell lighting??
In our daughter’s room I wanted to bring some color into the otherwise neutral room, so I looked for a purple area rug. I liked the look of this trellis rug (bought it in a purple color).
The only problem with it is that our dog likes to scratch on rugs to make himself a bed, so it has a bunch of pulls in it. I learned to look for open-weave rugs, which don’t have closed loops, to avoid this in the future. (For example, I LOVE the look of this braided rug but there is zero chance it would last in my house with my dog plus it being a light color.)
She also has a small round flokati rug that brings in some texture to the room.
How to get the best prices on rugs
When you’re ordering from Rugs USA, you’re already getting a much better price than from anywhere else. BUT how do you make sure you’re getting the absolute best price? Here are some secrets…
There’s almost always a sale going on, whether it’s on the main page or on the clearance page. (Always check out the clearance page!) If you are buying around Black Friday or any other major sale time, you’ll probably get an even better deal. (Most companies tend to do their best deals on Black Friday weekend.) IF you can’t wait, here are a few more secrets to getting a discount:
- Sign up for the email list. Oftentimes companies will send exclusive discounts via email, especially for a first order.
- Refer a friend! Rugs USA has a referral program where you can give a friend an extra 15% off their first purchase, and then you get an extra 15% off your next purchase when they buy. Coordinate with a friend if you can to take advantage of this extra discount.
FAQs and more about ordering from Rugs USA
I also should take this moment to share that in my day job I’m a digital marketing consultant, and Rugs USA has been a client of mine. That said, I was a Rugs USA customer YEARS before that happened – starting in 2013. I’m still a Rugs USA customer today!
The best things about Rugs USA:
- Thousands and thousands of designs to choose from (almost too many…)
- Tons of styles. Washable rugs, stain-resistant rugs, shag rugs, jute rugs, etc. etc. Everything from kitchen runners to entryway rugs to 10’x13′ rugs for your living room.
- Free 2-day shipping
- Prices! The prices are the best. I think of them as where to go when you want Home Goods prices but want it delivered to your door.
- 30-day returns on almost everything
Things I don’t love about Rugs USA:
- You have to pay to return any rugs. It’s not a ton of money but I hate paying for returns. I also am not a huge fan of having to drive a rug to FedEx and carry it in, but that’s my own fault for buying things I’m not sure I’ll love. If you get buyer’s remorse easily, I highly recommend you search through their Instagram page to see what rugs look like in real rooms. They also have a super easy feature on their site where you can view a rug in your room – it’s crazy how realistic it is compared to what the rug looks like when it’s actually down on the floor! The rug I ordered and returned was this striped one. It was just too much once I had it in the room. I think it cost a total of like $11 to return it.
- There are thousands of designs. A great thing, but I also get analysis paralysis sometimes when I have too many choices.
- Some rugs are definitely better than others. Stick with the best sellers or top reviewed and you’ll be golden!
- Some people might see this as a pro, but the washable rugs still need a rug pad underneath.
Is Rugs USA legit?
Yes! I’ve been buying rugs from them since 2011. They’ve been around for over 20 years. Rugs USA is based in the NYC area, and if you’re on the east coast you tend to get your rugs faster than the rest of the country because they have a warehouse in NJ. Right now they ship to the US and Canada.
For some reason they have an awful score on BBB (like a 1.3 out of 5). It kind of seems like people just go to Better Business Bureau to complain. There were so many other positive reviews elsewhere that I went ahead and ordered from them the first time. I personally had a great experience and kept ordering rugs there.
Why is Rugs USA so cheap?
Rugs USA built its business on getting affordable rugs into people’s homes. Meaning you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars just to outfit your home! They basically have wholesale prices, so you’ll save a bunch vs. buying from a company like Pottery Barn or Serena & Lily (both of which I also love, but they just don’t make sense economically for us.) At any point in time you can get a rug for 50% off or 75%. Don’t forget to check out their clearance page, which has even better deals.
Rugs USA Returns
Returns are really easy, as long as its within a 30 day window. The only downside is that you have to pay for them. I recently returned a striped rug that I didn’t love, and it wasn’t expensive. I think it was $11 return, and I had to drive it over to FedEx to drop it off.
Rugs USA Customer Service
I’ve only had to chat with their customer service once (when I returned that striped rug), and they were super nice and easy to deal with.
