What I’m Actually Buying for A Third Baby in 2024

When we had our first baby, I made a massive baby registry because I truly didn’t know what we needed. With our second baby, I really pared down on the baby gear. I sold some stuff we didn’t use and invested in other baby stuff that I knew we would use a ton. (Here’s my list of what I wanted/needed for our second baby.) I had to replace some items, like our baby monitor, which didn’t allow for multiple screens. (I wanted one in each of the kids’ rooms.) Now we’re about to have our third (and most likely final) baby, so here’s what’s on my list.

Because we had a daughter and then a son, we’re pretty much all set on clothes for this baby. Like, I have BINS upon bins of baby clothes in the storage side of our basement. I also am lucky that my sister has two kids, so we’ve been able to swap clothing back and forth! But I truly cannot resist matching sibling outfits, so if I buy anything clothing-related it will be that!

What I’m Buying for a Third Baby

I’m a pretty sentimental person when it comes to my kids, so each had their own going home outfit, baby blanket, and baby book, among other things. I keep a bin for each child with items I want them to have when they’re older, since I thought it was so special to get some of my childhood things when I was an adult.

Here’s what I’m buying for this third baby:

  • a going home outfit
  • a baby blanket (I LOVE this brand– both of my kids have them!)
  • diapers and wipes
  • car seat (ours is coming up on its expiration date)
  • a piggy bank (doubles as decor)
  • a baby memory book
  • We decided on trying the SNOO this time, since neither of our kids were great sleepers (and I’m honestly not a fan of the cry it out method). We used a stationary bassinet for our older two, but since we have not had good luck with infant sleep, we’re going to try the SNOO this time. I can’t wait to see it work its magic!
  • an additional baby monitor for the baby’s room (going with the Nanit this time around)
  • the Keekaroo changing pad is also on my list for something easy to wipe down and will save on laundry (we’ve used a regular changing pad with changing pad covers in the past)
baby essentials for third baby, what to buy 3rd baby

We already have quite a few items that we will reuse for this baby. I’m still figuring out the bed situation, but we do have 2 cribs already. They’re both currently transitioned to toddler beds, but we still have the pieces to make them back into a newborn crib.

These are some items we already have that we’re using for our third baby:

  • Our favorite crib mattress: A review of the Newton Baby crib mattress
  • A gender-neutral white dresser that works well in our space
  • This baby bassinet for the first floor (we used it with our son and loved it)
  • The crib mobile from this post
  • Our favorite baby pajamas (I assume this baby will be tall like my other two kids)

If you’re wondering what would make a great gift for someone having their third baby, here are some ideas! (I also have a list of gifts for new moms here!)

  • meals – literally no one wants to have to think about dinner with a new baby in the house
  • diapers – if you want to bring something purchased, diapers are always a good thing! You go through SO many diapers with a newborn. If you aren’t sure how big the baby is, size 1 is a safe bet.
  • the ever-popular Stanley cup for staying hydrated
  • a cute blanket with their name or monogram
  • clothes – while a third baby probably has a LOT of hand-me-downs, it’s nice to have something that is their own!

I’m thinking we’ll be making minimal purchases this time around!
