My Floor Cleaning Mop Robot: iRobot Braava Jet M6 Review

I keep posting about this little guy on Instagram, so I figured I’d make its own blog post! I got my floor mop robot (iRobot Braava Jet M6) for Christmas this year from my husband and kids. (Was that gift romantic? no. Did I love it? yes.) Since then I use it at least twice a week because it does such a good job cleaning the floors. We have hardwood floors on the first and second floors, and with 3 kids and a dog the floors can get pretty messy. (I actually think the dog is the biggest mess-maker, because he’s in and out of the backyard all the time.) Also I should note that we don’t wear shoes in the house. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen those reports of what is on the bottoms of your outdoor shoes (bacteria, viruses, etc.) but it’s disgusting so we have a mud room and that is where all of the shoes stay!

The paper towel floor test

Have you ever done the paper towel test on your floors? Get a paper towel, wet it, and just wipe a spot on your floors a few times. What color is the paper towel? If it’s anything other than white, your floors are not clean. I couldn’t believe how gray the paper towel was when I did this on my hardwood floors, since we clean a LOT!

We typically use our robot vacuum first or will vacuum ourselves, and then I’ll set the mop robot cleaner to go around the entire first floor. It goes in a back-and-forth pattern, so it gets the whole floor. And it does fine around objects, like toys or kitchen rugs. We used to mop the floors ourselves with a mop and bucket once a week, but our schedules have gotten a little crazy. So now we rely on this little mop cleaner to clean the floors.

Before and after: Cleaning pad

Here’s a side by side of a clean mop pad (on the right) and one from the last cleaning round I did (on the left).

before and after mopping hardwood floors with mop robot

The robot typically needs to clean about 600 square feet at a time. I don’t have to refill the water and solution during that, which is nice. I think if it were to do any more than 1000 square feet at once, I would have to refill it part of the way through (and also change the mop pad).

After it runs, I remove the mop pad and replace it with a clean one. I throw the dirty ones in the washing machine with the other cleaning towels we use. (I stopped cleaning with paper towels a while ago, unless it’s a mess that absolutely needs paper towels… IYKYK. I use cleaning cloths instead and just wash them regularly.)

Floor mop robot cleaning solution

For floor cleaner, you probably could just use a gentle soap or whatever you use on your hardwood floors. I use a Bona floor cleaner that comes in a pre-measured pouch. TIP: The first time you empty a pouch of pre-measured mix into the cleaner, mark on the robot where the cleaner filled to. Then when you are refilling from a much larger bottle – because buying in bulk is usually cheaper – you’ll know where to fill the liquid to. Then you just fill the rest with water as directed.

I honestly love this iRobot mop robot. Is the baby afraid of it? Yes. But does it make my life easier? Also yes.
